ExpressVPN tops our best VPN list for being fast and reliably secure. VyprVPN is known for its unique Chameleon protocol that can easily bypass VPN censorship. These two VPN services are good for hiding your online activity and granting you access to geo-restricted content. I’ll go over their similarities and differences in this VyprVPN vs ExpressVPN comparison.

An interesting fact about VyprVPN and ExpressVPN is that they were both released in 2009, so they have experience that more recently launched VPNs lack. Plus, you don’t survive this long in such a competitive industry if you’re not doing something right.

This review will pit these two VPNs against each other based on security, privacy, connection speeds, server sizes, key features, pricing, customer support and more. If you want to learn who comes out on top and how I made my decision, read to the end.

My Expert Opinion: Is VyprVPN or ExpressVPN Better?

ExpressVPN is better than VyprVPN. Based in the British Virgin Islands, ExpressVPN uses RAM-only servers that periodically wipe your data, minimizing the risk of anyone retrieving it in the future. VyprVPN has yet to transition its server infrastructure to RAM-only; though it still has a secure no-logs policy, its privacy doesn’t compare to ExpressVPN’s.

VyprVPN came up short in other categories like server network size, OS support and key features, but it impressed me in the pricing category. VyprVPN is a capable VPN, but it doesn’t stand a chance when pitted against ExpressVPN.

I Recommend VyprVPN For:

  1. $3 per month for 24 months

I Recommend ExpressVPN For:

  1. $6.67 per month for 15 months

VyprVPN and ExpressVPN both use up-to-date protocols that are strong enough to keep your online traffic safe. You can also rely on obfuscation with both VPN providers, which disguises your VPN traffic as a regular HTTPS connection to bypass VPN blocks.

VyprVPN offers obfuscation through the Chameleon protocol, while ExpressVPN grants automatic obfuscation on all servers, no matter which protocol you’re on.

VPN Protocols

VyprVPN has four protocols, though some may be unavailable depending on the operating system you’re using.

WireGuard offers the best speeds and reliable security, and it is available on all platforms. OpenVPN, an open-source protocol known for its robust security and decent speeds, is also available on all platforms. IKEv2 is available on macOS and Windows and is a good substitute for WireGuard.

The final option is Chameleon, a proprietary protocol you’ll only find on VyprVPN, which is designed to bypass geographical blocking in countries that suppress the free and open internet.

ExpressVPN has three protocols. OpenVPN TCP and UDP are available on Windows, macOS and Linux. TCP establishes a connection between the receiver and sender while transfering data, which can result in slower speeds. UDP doesn’t need to establish prior connections. Though this increases the risk of data loss, the transfer speeds are much faster.

Another protocol is ExpressVPN’s proprietary Lightway, which has the best speeds and security. Finally, IKEv2 isavailable on macOS and iOS, provides good speeds and is a fine alternative if you’re having trouble with Lightway.

Both ExpressVPN and VyprVPN use private DNS servers to minimize the risk of exposing your DNS requests. ExpressVPN automatically uses its own DNS servers in every VPN location. VyprVPN offers private DNS through VyprDNS, but you need to manually activate it in the app settings (except on iOS).

Encryption Tests

I ran encryption tests for VyprVPN and ExpressVPN using Wireshark to check whether they secured my online traffic. The screenshots below show the results.

encryption test
VyprVPN and ExpressVPN passed my encryption tests.

As you can see from the screenshots, you can’t make sense of the random text, symbols and numbers. That’s what a hacker or anyone who tries to snoop on your online activity would see, which is proof that encryption works with VyprVPN and ExpressVPN.

Security Breaches

In October 2023, a hacker group called Ninja Defenders breached VyprVPN. Approximately 301KB of user data was compromised, including some personal email addresses. This was the first security breach VyprVPN experienced. It acted swiftly to deal with the violation by bolstering its security infrastructure and monitoring systems.

In the 15 years that ExpressVPN has been around, it has never experienced a major security or privacy breach. It has even introduced ExpressVPN Keys, which lets you check whether your email addresses have been included in a data breach so you can take appropriate action to secure yourself.

Winner: ExpressVPN wins this round because it has never been hacked. However, both ExpressVPN and VyprVPN are excellent security options with reliable encryption and private DNS.

A VPN protects the user’s IP address, but it also needs a zero-logging policy to ensure your private data isn’t collected or stored. Let’s see how these two VPNs keep you private.

RAM-Only Servers

When VPN server infrastructure is based on volatile memory, better known as RAM-only, your browsing data is periodically wiped to ensure it never sees the light of day. In short, RAM-only servers mean you don’t have to count on the VPN to follow its own privacy policy.

VyprVPN doesn’t run on RAM-only servers, though it does adhere to a no-logs policy stipulating that it never collects or stores your browsing data. VyprVPN also owns all its servers and networks. This makes it more reliable because it reduces leaks that are common when third parties are involved.

ExpressVPN is in the clear here, as its entire server infrastructure runs on RAM-only servers in addition to its no-logs policy. You’re safe with both VPNs, but ExpressVPN eliminates the threat of data retrieval altogether.

Independent Audits

Leviathan Security audited VyprVPN’s no-logs policy in 2018. The final report showed that VyprVPN and its parent company, Golden Frog, don’t log any user data, except as required for business operations.

vyprvpn audit
VyprVPN’s no-logs policy was audited in 2018.

ExpressVPN is one of the most frequently audited VPNs. Its no-logs policy alone has been audited three times so far. PwC Switzerland conducted the first one in 2019, Cure53 conducted one in May 2022 and KPMG conducted the most recent one in September 2022. Nothing suspicious was detected in any of these audits.

expressvpn audits
ExpressVPN has had three audits focusing on its zero-logging policy.

Winner: ExpressVPN wins this round due to having RAM-only servers and having undergone more audits than VyprVPN.

Key Features

Both ExpressVPN and VyprVPN offer a kill switch that prevents IP and DNS leaks by cutting off your internet if the VPN connection drops. Whether you’re using either of these VPNs on Android, iOS, Windows, macOS or Linux, you can enable the kill switch from a button located in the app settings.

expressvpn kill switch
The ExpressVPN kill switch is called “network lock.”

Split tunneling is another vital feature found on both VPNs. It allows you to choose the apps you want to encrypt and those you want to leave out of the VPN tunnel. On VyprVPN, split tunneling is called“connection per app” and is available on macOS, Android and iOS. ExpressVPN provides split tunneling on Windows, macOS and Android.

vyprvpn split tunneling
On VyprVPN, split tunneling is called “connection per app.”

ExpressVPN is the only VPN here with any sort of content blocker. You can activate the threat manager to block trackers and malicious sites, the ad blocker to handle ads and parental controls to block adult sites.

Winner: ExpressVPN wins again because of its blockers for malicious sites, ads and adult sites.

ExpressVPN vs VyprVPN Speeds

VPN speeds are important for general browsing, video chatting, streaming, gaming and torrenting. Here’s how these two performed in my tests.

VyprVPN Speed Tests

I tested VyprVPN with the WireGuard protocol from Croatia with my unprotected speeds of 292.49 Mbps. Here are the results.

Egypt was the fastest location in my speed tests, registering 261.36 Mbps, a 10.46% speed drop allowing me to stream even 4K content without any buffering. However, the speeds drastically dropped with servers further away, losing around 90% of download speeds for Australia and Japan servers.

ExpressVPN Speed Tests

Here are my speed results with the Lightway protocol.

1. fastest server

ExpressVPN is one of the fastest VPNs I’ve ever used, and it didn’t disappoint here. The fastest server for me was the United Kingdom, which provided 282.78 Mbps, a 3.32% speed drop. This was sufficient for streaming 4K content without issues and playing games with minimal lag. Japan recorded the highest speed drop of 51.16%, averaging 142.86 Mbps, which was still fast enough for gaming, streaming and speedy downloads.

Winner: ExpressVPN wins this round, as it was faster than VyprVPN across most of the tested servers.

Streaming Performance

ExpressVPN and VyprVPN unblocked all the major streaming platforms on my first attempt, showing me Netflix libraries from all over the world. However, streaming was smoother with ExpressVPN due to its faster speeds.

Platform:ExpressVPNProton VPN
Amazon Prime VideoYesYes
Peacock TVYesYes
BBC iPlayerYesYes

Tie: This was a tie, as both ExpressVPN and VyprVPN unblocked all the major streaming platforms without problems.

Server Network

A large server network makes unblocking geo-restricted content easier and improves performance for all users. A nearby server tends to perform better. For example, having servers in South Korea puts both ExpressVPN and VyprVPN on our best Korea VPN roundup. Let’s explore the server spread for each VPN provider in this comparison.

VyprVPN Server Spread

VyprVPN has fewer servers than ExpressVPN, with 70 locations across 61 countries. Europe leads the way with 28 servers, followed by Asia with 14. Africa has only two servers, located in the north, while Oceania has three, including the Marshall Islands.

North & Central America 511
South America44
Middle East25

ExpressVPN Server Spread

ExpressVPN has servers in 163 locations across 105 countries, which is more than VyprVPN. Most of the VPN servers are in Europe and Asia. However, ExpressVPN has an impressive presence in Africa, with six locations in six countries.

North America1440
South America410
Middle East22

Winner: This is another win for ExpressVPN, which has superior server spread and better distribution than VyprVPN.

OS Support & Usability

VyprVPN is compatible with Windows, Mac, Linux, Android and iOS. There’s manual OpenVPN support for routers running on DD-WRT, AsusWRT, Tomato and OpenWRT firmware. You can also use a Chrome extension to secure your browsing activity.

vyprvpn apps
You can download VyprVPN apps directly from the official website.

VyprVPN doesn’t have smart DNS. This feature is designed to make streaming possible on devices like LG or Samsung TVs that don’t have VPN apps. You can connect a maximum of five devices simultaneously with one VyprVPN account. Like ExpressVPN, it’s on our list of the best VPNs for multiple devices.

ExpressVPN is compatible with more devices than VyprVPN is. You can use it on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS, Apple TV and Fire TV, and it has an extension for Google Chrome. You can also use the VPN on a unique router called ExpressVPN Aircove, which comes with the VPN pre-installed and has a dashboard app.

expressvpn apps
You can download any compatible ExpressVPN app from the official website.

ExpressVPN lets you stream directly on devices without native VPNs through a smart DNS feature called MediaStreamer. However, smart DNS doesn’t encrypt your online traffic. The upside is you’ll have amazing speeds compared to regular ExpressVPN app connections. The maximum number of devices you can connect simultaneously on ExpressVPN is eight.

Ease of Use

Both ExpressVPN and VyprVPN are easy to use. I love the dark mode interface on VyprVPN, which is easy on my eyes. Important features like split tunneling, the kill switch and protocols are easily accessible in the app settings. The servers are neatly arranged in alphabetical order, so you can find what you want with a quick scroll or by using the search function.

VyprVPN has a clean user interface that’s easy to navigate.

ExpressVPN is equally smooth. Everything you need is available in the app settings, from the kill switch and ad blockers to the protocols. The servers are grouped by continent, and you can use the search function to find any available location. Thanks to their good mobile apps, both of these services made our best VPN for mobile list.

Winner: ExpressVPN wins this round because it is compatible with more devices than VyprVPN. Plus, it offers a smart DNS feature and an easy router dashboard. Nevertheless, both VPNs are easy to use.

Plans & Pricing

ExpressVPN is more expensive than VyprVPN. Both VPNs let you use a 30-day money-back guarantee to cancel any of the plans if you’re not satisfied and get a full refund. Neither VPN offers a free plan. Let’s break down the price plans and see whether there are any hidden fees.

Customer Support

Getting prompt help when encountering VPN issues is integral to any reputable service. Here’s how subscribers can contact customer support with each VPN.

VyprVPN Customer Support

You can quickly access all the VyprVPN support pages from the app by tapping the three bars in the top left corner and choosing “support.” You can also go to the help center, which has a page of frequently asked questions with detailed answers.

vyprvpn support
VyprVPN lets you access all its customer support resources through the app.

The “report a bug” and “contact support” options give you access to customer support via direct email, where you receive a ticket number. However, responses can take up to 48 hours. If you want faster responses, try the 24/7 live chat option, where you can connect to a live agent who can address your concerns in real time.

ExpressVPN Customer Support

ExpressVPN also lets you quickly access support pages through the app. You can send a direct email, which can take up to 48 hours. Faster responses are available through the 24/7 live chat, which has friendly live agents. Other resources include an FAQ section and video tutorials mostly dealing with ExpressVPN app installations and troubleshooting.

expressvpn support
ExpressVPN offers live chat, FAQs and video tutorials.

Tie: This was a tie because both ExpressVPN and VyprVPN offer fast live chat responses and provide other resources, such as FAQs and tutorials, for troubleshooting VPN problems.

Conclusion: Why I Think ExpressVPN Wins Overall

ExpressVPN wins overall because it outperformed VyprVPN in most of the categories. It offers amazing security features without any history of breaches, is faster and ideal for streaming and gaming, and has a bigger server network. Additionally, ExpressVPN has RAM-only servers, which offer better privacy and have been audited more times than VyprVPN’s.

The only area where VyprVPN was better than ExpressVPN was the pricing, which is cheaper. The service was on par with ExpressVPN in terms of unblocking streaming platforms and offering customer support options.

Is this a fair verdict, or do you feel VyprVPN deserves more wins? Have you used either of these VPNs before? How was your overall experience? Let us know in the comments below, and thank you for your continued readership.
